New Graduate Veterinary Surgeon
To join our New Graduate Programme
About us
Bay Vet Group is an independently owned, RCVS accredited, 100% companion animal practice on the South coast of Devon, we are proud to have served the local pet community for over 50 years.
This will be our sixth year with our new graduate programme; we aim to provide a supportive environment in which to hone the skills learned at Veterinary school in the transition from University to companion animal practice. We have 5 VetGDP advisors to support our new graduates.
Our practices are based in Teignmouth, Torquay, Newton Abbot, Paignton and our main surgery located in Dawlish.
Over the last few years, the practice has invested heavily and are now proud to be able to offer CT, digital radiography, ultrasound scanners (Including Doppler), comprehensive anaesthetic monitoring equipment, excellent surgical and consulting facilities including three dental suites, full IDEXX laboratory facilities, microscopy, endoscopy and laparoscopy. Most importantly we pride ourselves on our excellent team of experienced clinicians with the added expertise of certificate holders in Cardiology, Dermatology, Small animal surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry and emergency medicine.
The role
This year we are looking to employ 2 new graduates into our practice, with the aim that by the end of the two year post our new vet will be confident and capable in a sole charge situation on a first opinion basis.
This is a full time position equivalent to 40 hours a week, with a generous out of hour’s rota. We outsource our out of hours service but do maintain our own inpatient care. The inpatient care rota is shared between our junior vets, backed up by our senior vets who are available to help when required. You are also supported on call by one of our RVN’S, SVN’S or experienced Veterinary Nursing assistants.
In the first year our aim is to get core surgical and consulting skills established, to feel confident as first opinion surgeons and to be confident in making diagnoses.
In the second year we expect these core skills to be used to expand experience and we very much enjoy seeing our new graduates rapidly gaining confidence, knowledge and skills.
Many of our previous graduates have stayed on after their contracted two years and we are always on the lookout for Veterinary surgeons who want to grow and develop specialised skills, we are keen to find new graduates who would like to develop their careers further into advanced surgery or dentistry.
We have a really friendly team and encourage socialisation together outside of work. We hold many practice social events such as barbeques, meals and our infamous Christmas party.
South Devon offers one of the best quality of life areas to live in; our practices are all within a mile of great beaches! Water sports in and on water available locally including sailing, surfing, kite surfing and sea kayaking, with many good local clubs. Dartmoor is a 15 minutes’ drive away which is great for hiking, horse-riding and cycling. The city of Exeter is only a 20 minute drive away, and good transport links gives easy access to London and the rest of the UK.

We are offering a starting salary of £35,000 (including accomodation allowance) rising to £38,000 in the second year with 6 weeks holiday (including bank holidays) plus your birthday off.
Pension, Private Healthcare and Death in Service as well as RCVS subscriptions and VDS cover paid.
Driving license and own transport essential for this position
